देवतापवमानः सोमः

छन्दगायत्री
ए॒ष उ॒ स्य वृषा॒ रथोऽव्यो॒ वारे॑भिरर्षति । गच्छ॒न्वाजं॑ सह॒स्रिण॑म् ॥
ए॒षः । ऊँ॒ इति॑ । स्यः । वृषा॑ । रथः॑ । अव्यः॑ । वारे॑भिः । अ॒र्ष॒ति॒ । गच्छ॑न् । वाज॑म् । स॒ह॒स्रिण॑म् ॥
स्यः स प्रसिद्धः एषः अभिषुतः सोमः वृषा वर्षिता रथः रंहणस्वभावः अव्यो वारेभिः अवेर्वालैर्दशापवित्रेण अर्षति गच्छति कलशम् । वाजम् अन्नं सहस्रिणं सहस्रसंख्याकं यजमानाय प्रदातुं गच्छन् द्रोणकलशं प्रविशन्नर्षतीत्यर्थः । उ पूरणः ॥
“This Soma, the showerer of benefits, the chariot, dashes through the woollen fleece, bearing (to the worshipper) thousandfold food.”
THIS Steer, this Chariot, rushes through the woollen filter, as he goes
To war that wins a thousand spoils.
This very one, a bull, a chariot, rushes through the sheep’s fleece,
going to the thousandfold prize.
Er, dieser Stier, dem Wagen gleich rennt durch die Widderwolle hin, Er geht auf tausend Güter aus.
Dieser bullenhafte Wagen eilt durch die Schafhaare, nach dem tausendwertigen Siegerpreis laufend.
ए॒तं त्रि॒तस्य॒ योष॑णो॒ हरिं॑ हिन्व॒न्त्यद्रि॑भिः । इन्दु॒मिन्द्रा॑य पी॒तये॑ ॥
ए॒तम् । त्रि॒तस्य॑ । योष॑णः । हरि॑म् । हि॒न्व॒न्ति॒ । अद्रि॑ऽभिः । इन्दु॑म् । इन्द्रा॑य । पी॒तये॑ ॥
एतम् इन्दुं क्लिद्यमानं हरिं हरितवर्णं सोमं त्रितस्य ऋषेः योषणः अङ्गुलयः अद्रिभिः हिन्वन्ति इन्द्राय इन्द्रस्य पीतये पानाय ॥
“The fingers of Trita effuse by the stones this green-tinted juice for Indra's drinking.”
The Dames of Trita with the stones onward impel this Tawny One
Indu to Indra for his drink.
This tawny one do the maidens of Trita [=fingers] impel with the stones, the drop for Indra to drink.
Des Trita Jungfraun senden ihn, das goldne Ross, durch das Gestein, Zum Trunk, dem Indra Indu hin.
Diesen Falben treiben des Trita Frauen mit den Preßsteinen zum Laufe, den Saft für Indra zum Trinken.
ए॒तं त्यं ह॒रितो॒ दश॑ मर्मृ॒ज्यन्ते॑ अप॒स्युव॑: । याभि॒र्मदा॑य॒ शुम्भ॑ते ॥
ए॒तम् । त्यम् । ह॒रितः॑ । दश॑ । म॒र्मृ॒ज्यन्ते॑ । अ॒प॒स्युवः॑ । याभिः॑ । मदा॑य । शुम्भ॑ते ॥
एतं त्यं तं सोममध्वर्योः दश हरितः हरणस्वभावा अङ्गलयः अपस्युवः कर्मेच्छवः सत्यः मर्मृज्यन्ते शोधयन्ति । याभिः इन्द्रस्य मदाय शुम्भते दीप्यते । शोध्यत इत्यर्थः । तमेतमिति संबन्धः ॥
“The ten fingers, eager in the work, express that (Soma), and by them it is purified for the exhilaration (of Indra).”
Ten active fingers carefully adorn him here; they make him bright
And beauteous for the gladdening draught.
This very one do the ten tawny ones keep grooming, hard at work, those by whom he is beautified for exhilaration.
Ja, eben diesen reinigen zehn Stuten, eifrig in dem Werk, Durch die er hell zum Bausch erglänzt.
Denselbigen putzen die zehn goldfarbigen, geschäftigen Finger, von denen er zum Rausche schön gemacht wird.
ए॒ष स्य मानु॑षी॒ष्वा श्ये॒नो न वि॒क्षु सी॑दति । गच्छ॑ञ्जा॒रो न यो॒षित॑म् ॥
ए॒षः । स्यः । मानु॑षीषु । आ । श्ये॒नः । न । वि॒क्षु । सी॒द॒ति॒ । गच्छ॑न् । जा॒रः । न । यो॒षित॑म् ॥
स्यः सः एषः सोमः मानुषीषु विक्षु प्रजासु यजमानरूपास्वनुग्रहेण आ सीदति श्येनो न श्येन इव । पुनः क इव । योषितं गच्छन् अभिगच्छन् जारो न जार इव । यथा संकेतितस्तस्याः कामपूरणाय गूढो गच्छति तद्वदित्यर्थः ॥
“That Soma sits down among human beings like a falcon, hastening as a gallant to his mistress.”
He like a falcon settles down amid the families of men.
Speeding like lover to his love.
This very one settles among the human clans like a falcon (on a nest), going like a swain to a maiden.
Und er gleich einem Adler setzt sich auf der Menschen Häuser hin, geht wie der Bräutigam zur Braut.
Derselbige läßt sich in den menschlichen Ansiedelungen nieder wie ein Falke im Nest, wie ein Buhle, der zur jungen Frau geht.
ए॒ष स्य मद्यो॒ रसोऽव॑ चष्टे दि॒वः शिशु॑: । य इन्दु॒र्वार॒मावि॑शत् ॥
ए॒षः । स्यः । मद्यः॑ । रसः॑ । अव॑ । च॒ष्टे॒ । दि॒वः । शिशुः॑ । यः । इन्दुः॑ । वार॑म् । आ । अवि॑शत् ॥
स्यः सः एषः मद्यः मदनिमित्तः रसः अव चष्टे सर्वमवपश्यति। दिवः शिशुः । द्युपुत्रः । तत्रोत्पत्तेः पुत्रत्वमस्य । य इन्दुः दीप्तः सोमः वारं दशापवित्रम् आविशत् आविशति स एष इति ॥
“That exhilarating juice beholds all, Indu, the child of heaven, that percolates through the fleece.”
This young exhilarating juice looks downward from its place in heaven,
This Soma-drop that pierced the sieve.
This very one, the exhilarating juice, looks down, the child of heaven, the drop who entered the fleece.
Ja er, der Saft, der Rausch erregt, der Spross des Himmels blickt herab, Wenn Indu durch die Wolle drang.
Derselbige berauschende Seim schaut herab, des Himmels Kind, der Saft, der in die Haarseihe ging.
ए॒ष स्य पी॒तये॑ सु॒तो हरि॑रर्षति धर्ण॒सिः । क्रन्द॒न्योनि॑म॒भि प्रि॒यम् ॥
ए॒षः । स्यः । पी॒तये॑ । सु॒तः । हरिः॑ । अ॒र्ष॒ति॒ । ध॒र्ण॒सिः । क्रन्द॑न् । योनि॑म् । अ॒भि । प्रि॒यम् ॥
एष स्यः स सोमः पीतये पानाय सुतः अभिषुतः हरिः हरितवर्णः धर्णसिः धारकः प्रियं स्वप्रियभूतं योनिं स्थानं द्रोणकलशं क्रन्दन् शब्दयन् अभि अर्षति गच्छति ॥ ॥ २८॥
“That green-tinted, all-sustaining (Soma), when effused for the drinking (of the gods), rushes crying aloud to its beloved plural ce.”
Poured for the draught, this tawny juice
flows forth, intelligent, crying out,
Unto the well-beloved place.
This very one, the tawny one pressed for drinking, rushes steadily, neighing toward his own dear womb.

Und er zum Trunk erzeugt, der Hengst, der goldne, starke rennt dahin, Anwiehernd den geliebten Sitz.
Derselbige zum Trunke ausgepreßte Falbe rinnt ausdauernd brüllend auf seine liebe Stätte zu.
